"...Long before New York became the financial capitol of the world, New York was the staging ground for world-famous, world-class public protests.

There's been demonstrations going on in Manhattan since the nineteenth century. Like any other public event - accommodations must be made for the masses of people who attend these public demonstrations.

This simple fact of life-in-the-big-city seems to be somehow lost on the current city administration. Over the years the Bloomberg administration's response to mass demonstrations: unwarranted surveillance, harassment, impediment, random arrests, mass arrests, random violence, pepper spray and ear-pain-guns.

When a city and a police department refuse to make accommodations for a mass public event - things happen - like pepper spraying women for holding a sign -- or unknown liquids getting thrown on cops. The absolute insistence that all demonstrations take place on a small part of the sidewalk - and the absurd notion that no one can be inconvenienced by a demonstration - results in scuffles over barricades and arrests for blocking traffic and endless lawsuits and injuries to both cops and passers-by.

Then there are more deliberate forms if civil disobedience - like the ninety-nine union members - who sat down in the middle of chambers street earlier this evening -- in front of many news cameras police-on their-best-behavior immediately arrested those ninety-nine union members. Among those ninety-nine - not an accidental number -- City Council member Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn.

About those ear pain guns -- lets run the slideshow -- downtown earlier today - this is the LRAD high-pitched sound blaster designed to deter pirate boats and terrorists at least a quarter mile away -- its called a distance-hailing-and-crowd-control-device, originally developed to warn incoming vessels approaching without permission. The LRAD 100X can be cranked up to an incredible 172 decibels. Human hearing is immediately damaged at 140 decibels.

Here is a picture that needs to be seen more -- this is eighty-four-year-old Dorli Rainey. She's a retired school teacher pepper sprayed over the weekend at occupy Seattle -- this is the result of an increasingly militarized police culture in the United States and a militarized culture needs an enemy to fight -- that enemy is the public.

The police were once considered part of the community -- now its an occupying army.

From Warsaw, one clever activist outfoxed the riot police - this video from latajacakamera on YouTube -- this is a flying drone, a Polish-built Robokopter -- police don't even seem to notice it. But if used here it would be dubbed a terror device.

Just like Bloomberg did today at an afternoon press conference where he described metal-tube like devices protesters planned to use to chain themselves to the doors of the stock exchange. This was the best you could come up with? Metal tubes? No dirty bombs or anti-capitalism nerve gas?"

Michael Bloomberg - America's twelfth-richest man -- blames congress for the financial collapse and claims that the protesters have chosen a totally inappropriate target in wall street - as if the banks were ever forced to do anything. The banks rushed into a loan market because of greed -- plain and simple. Congress merely laid the groundwork; besides mister mayor -- you know damn well that there is a mechanism to hold congress accountable -- it's called an election. You might remember your last one -- you stole it.

As the occupy movements fight colder weather and police harassment and violence -- they are also fighting elements within their own. Violent demonstrators willing to provoke police and destroy property provide an excuse for authorities to attack a demonstration. Up till now the American public largely supports the aims of the demonstrators -- and largely supports the non-violent movement. Many in power who wish to see the movement fail know all-too-well: images of masked or helmeted youths throwing Molotov Cocktails or smashing storefronts on American television screens would derail the movement in a media minute.

Occupy is the little movement that could, and each time it gets brutalized by the authorities its numbers swell. With each arrest the support and the sympathy grows. Though calls for a concise set of demands from the protesters seem logical and reasonable the reasonable response seems to be – its not one thing – its everything. You are not dealing with a group leader or spokesperson, but you are dealing with an angry public, profoundly dissatisfied with where their hard earned tax dollars are going.

This is a non-event - vapid and meaningless.

There is no leader – there is no message. Only – the non-message spreads – there’s occupy Boston and occupy Los Angeles and occupy Boise, Idaho for crissakes. You got the highest unemployment in sixty years. You got very few jobs with pitiful wages, constant efforts to eliminate minimum wage. You got union busting at the private, corporate, state and federal level. You got across the board corporate deregulation breeding economic and ecological ruin on huge stretches of america. While the protests have generally been nonviolent, the police in New York arrested 700 people on Saturday after some demonstrators marched on the roadway of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Transport Workers Union is going to court today in hopes of blocking New York City from forcing bus drivers to transport any Occupy Wall Street protesters after the New York police department commandeered at least three buses to take many of the 700 protesters off the Brooklyn Bridge this weekend. Last week, the TWU voted to support the Occupy Wall Street movement and called the order to bus prisoners “a blatant act of political retaliation.”

"TWU Local 100 supports the protesters on Wall Street and takes great offense that the mayor and NYPD have ordered operators to transport citizens who were exercising their constitutional right to protest - and shouldn't have been arrested in the first place," [Transport Workers Union president John] Samuelsen said Sunday night.

At least five empty buses were commandeered from terminal points on both sides of the bridge, Samuelsen said.

Here's Samuelsen, in plain language, explaining why the TWU voted solidarity with OWS. (They now have "a couple hundred members" who joined the occupation.)

OWS "HIPPIES" NOT GOING HOME

Because the NYPD and Bloomberg at first were secure that the Occupy Wall Street protesters would be ignored, they surmised that a few dozen hippies would just give up and go home.
Three weeks in, they try mass arrests - and end up as BBC News’ top story. Now the City cannot ignore the growing numbers, the growing support, and the growing attention paid to OWS.
As for the complaints of a lack of a specific complaint, muddled message, or lack of focus, people in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, and even in Toronto who have formed "solidarity" protests seem to know exactly what OWS is saying.
So next expect the City to pressure Brookfield Properties, owners of Zuccotti Park, to take legal action to drive the protestors from the encampment.
However, after three weeks of international attention - and hundreds of people willing to sleep outdoors in the rain - there is very little the City can do other than pepper spray peaceful women and arrest these people.
Whatever the City decides to do - ignore them or bust them - this has past the point where OWS will fold their tents and go quietly into the night.
If significant numbers of union members join the camp out on Wednesday (I'm predicting they will), then OWS will grow into the major issue of the 2012 elections.

hostage-takers Boehner (and the Teabaggers for that matter) changed the debate from "JOBS" (something everybody understands) to "DEBT CEILING" (so huge and complex i doubt some economics professors can even grasp it).

with this so-called "deal" the President announced "the lowest level of domestic spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president".

(that's pre-Cousin Brucie, boomers. when Eisenhower left office fifty years ago, a new Chevrolet cost $1,800, a dozen eggs cost 52 cents, sirloin steak was 89 cents a pound, the average household income was $7,000 a year and a telegraph was the most efficient way of conveying a message.)

two days before Dwight Eisenhower left office, the former Five-Star General left us a little message about how his former boss, the US Military, might just ruin our democracy.

That could mean that dozens of sports, media, and political celebrities who claim News of the World hacked into their telephone accounts won’t be able to find out exactly what the tabloid knew and how it got the information.

FCP X: TERMINAL

i have never owned a PC. never.

two decades ago i switched directly from Commodore Amiga computers to Macs because Macs were the only platform that gave me pro video capabilities. (in those dark days, pro video software - Avid, Premiere and Media 100 - could not even run on a PC.)

ten years later, Apple introduced Final Cut Pro. as an editor, i was really attracted to some innovative features that other programs did not have, and: it was cheaper and sexier than the others.

Apple developed FCP into a full featured production suite which satisfied most any professional need, and continued to innovate and expand the product line so that any serious editor using FCP would stick with it, and invest in Apple hardware as well.

so for the past decade, i have continued to buy upgrades and invest in "muscle car" Macs. my system cost about $11,000, the Final Cut Studio software was $1,300. practically every project i have edited for the past decade has been on FCP including a feature length documentary (which won several awards, thank you).

like many others, i have been waiting for the new FCP release for two years now. (i was ready to plunk down the cash for it this past paycheck.)
Apple blew it. the new FCP X is severely limited when compared to Final Cut Studio, and it cuts off many work flows which are standard operating procedure in this business. for instance, FCP X can't capture or output to tape without some third-party workarounds. (yes, i KNOW videotape is dead. try telling that to a client on a deadline who is waiting to deliver - get this - a finished HDCAM videotape.)

worse news is that FCP X is completely incompatible with any existing FCP project. if you started a project in FCP 7, FCP X won't open it. Apple has eliminated the EDL (edit decision list, an ancient but ubiquitous file format containing every in and out point of every edit on the timeline) or any ability to export files to Avid, or Pro Tools, etc.

for many people who edit weddings, for instance, FCP X will be great. if the project is imported and outputted on the same system, fine. but for anyone who has had to work with an audio house, or work with other editors or even other editing platforms (meaning almost all professional editors) FCP X STINKS.
the other limitations have been well documented here and here.

every other pro editor i have spoken to is now considering Avid, and wondering why we should pay a premium for Apple's hardware when PC platforms are so much cheaper.

i once worked for Panasonic selling pro gear to broadcast clients, and someone in the company gave me some perspective: "sure, Sony and Panasonic make a profit with the broadcast gear, but it is pennies compared to what they make with consumer gadgets". Apple gets this logic, and maybe they have decided that all the coding and development and third party integration just ain't worth it compared to the massive profitability from ipads and iphones.

Apple, it seems, is abandoning the professional and broadcast market, and after years of investing time, money, and infrastructure in Apple - we are PISSED. unless they fix this FAST - professionals will abandon Apple - forever.

PC's aren't sexy, but we got deadlines. jobless ain't sexy neither.

Gil Scott-Heron, the influential spoken word artist, poet, musician, and author - considered to be "the Godfather of Hip Hop" - died friday in New York at age 62.

It was not immediately known what killed Scott-Heron, who was best known for the 1970 song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," a politically and socially charged song that examined the African American condition in America at the time. The song was banned by some radio stations.

Born in 1949, Scott-Heron first gained fame for his poetry and spoken word performances in the late 1960s. By the mid-1970s, he had published two books of poetry and recorded four albums, including "Small Talk At 125th & Lenox."

His early albums, "Pieces of a Man" and "Winter in America," have been credited with influencing other musical genres, such as hip hop. But it was the song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" that put Scott-Heron on the musical map.

the same exact thing had just happened with a terror attack on New York - before anybody knew what was going on, before the twin towers fell, before the Pentagon was hit, before Bush had even gone into hiding - the government had a suspect - within 45 minutes of the first plane hitting the south tower.
incredible - which means not at all credible.
nine years later Obama pulls a rabbit out of his hat, shoots it in the left eye, and dumps it in a 'secret location' in the sea before he announces the feat. case closed.
(but rest assured - we got DNA and grisly photos.)
many credible people believed that Bin Laden died long ago of kidney disease.
i'm not sure what to believe, but the story that Barack Obama told last night - and the claim that Bin Laden sleeps with the fishes at the bottom of the sea - sounds mighty fishy to me.

been watching the three news networks all afternoon. the only person who has uttered the word "crosshairs" or who has referred to the threats against Giffords - is Giffords herself! this is in a video from last march, which i have included in the previous post.
nobody has acknowledged that the Tea Party and Tea Party candidates have been "targeting" the congresswoman throughout 2010. she was the only Democrat in Arizona to win a congressional election last November.
there’s been barely a mention of her opposition to Arizona’s contentious immigration policy.
yes, Laughner appears on the surface to be a looney. but that shouldn’t rule out that he may have been motivated by the "targeting" of Rep. Giffords.

the man who shot Rep. Giffords and 17 others today is identified as Jared Lee Laughner. this is his high school yearbook pic from 2006.
he had a MySpace page which has been taken down.
here is a video from his Youtube pageposted three weeks ago. can't make much sense of it - apparantly he was a student at Pima County Community College and had some dispute over tuition, which he characterized as 'unconstitutional', and he refers, in the abstract, to being removed from the campus by police because of 'speaking".
Laughner does not actually appear or speak on any of the five vids posted - only text and stock music. if you don't have any patience to actually watch, here's an excerpt:

i spoke on thursday about events accelerating this month and next, and i fear this is the first significant event.
the crazies have emerged from the woodwork of America.
Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat from Arizona, was shot in the head - point blank - and possibly 18 others were shot outside a Tucson grocery store this morning. Giffords was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event in a Safeway parking lot.
she is in reported to be 'in surgery' as i write this.
Giffords was listed on Sarah Palin's sarahpac.com site as one of 20 democrats "targeted" in a graphic with crosshairs over her congressional district.
the graphic has now been removed from that site. (i have not heard mention of this graphic on any of the cable news outlets so far.)
motive of the gunman - described by witnesses as a young man in his teens or early twenties - remains unknown, but this is Arizona, where immigration and other issues may have been a factor.
in November, Giffords won a tough campaign for re-election against a Tea-Party opponent.

Giffords' Tucson office was one of three damaged last March by vandals who targeted Democrats in advance of the U.S. House vote on the controversial health care legislation. A glass panel at her office was shattered, and at the time her staff said that it appeared the window had been damaged by a pellet gun.

Fox News just reported that Federal District Judge John M. Roll was among those killed in the parking lot today.

besides the sarahpac.com crosshair image, many other such metaphorical threats have targeted at Rep. Giffords. Just look at this campaign ad run by her opponent last June:

(that sounds like a Roger Ailes idea to me.) in fact the there’s such a fever for transparency that this health care resolution repeal must be cloaked in the fear mongering language of Fox News – so ordinary beer-drinking thorazine addled Americans can understand what’s at stake. after all – you would gladly sacrifice your children’s health care if you understood that insuring your kids was - killing jobs! wouldn’t you – or wouldn’t ya?
yes - repealing the communistic socialized heal care bill would just save money – right?

Operation Payback, a group of Internet activists and hackers, took credit on Monday for crashing the Web Site of a Swiss Bank hours after it froze an account set up by the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange.

Writing on Twitter the group called on fellow hackers to attack the PostFinance.ch site and within minutes it was knocked offline.

Earlier on Monday, the same group of activists said they attacked PayPal, which froze a WikiLeaks account three days ago.

Imagine a country where you can’t buy a book -
Where government troops shut down schools for ethnic children.

Imagine a country where the state policy is to torture monks, rape women, enslave children, to burn ethnic villages and shoot the elderly - pregnant women - and children.

Imagine a country where entire families are sentenced to prison - because one member of that family expressed dissent.

Imagine a country where people are afraid to even speak the name of the lady who was elected as their leader twenty years ago.

Imagine a country where families of landmine victims are charged by the government for the cost of the exploded landmine - where posting a blog or taking a video can get you sentenced to sixty-five years in prison.

That country is Burma – also known as Myanmar – a bloody military dictatorship bordering Thailand, China and India.

Last Sunday the junta staged a national election in Burma. The junta hired rebel armies whit whom they have a cease-fire agreement to supervise the voting process in the ethnic Karen region in the northeast of Burma.

By supervise the junta meant conduct the voting process - at gunpoint. The Karen troops were instructed to hold guns to the heads of their own people as they voted.

Some of the Karen troops turned the guns on the Burmese troops. The Burmese troops responded by shelling villages in the area. Some of the shells landed across the border in Thailand, as did twenty thousand refugees.

A good friend of this broadcast is Jeremy Taylor. Jeremy sent three people into Burma with video cameras. They posed as tourists because foreign journalists are not allowed into Burma. They were inside Burma for three months and witnessed a rigged constitutional referendum vote and a cyclone that killed two-hundred-thousand people.

Because these filmmakers were followed by military police the American Embassy arranged for the videotapes to be flown back here to New York as soon as I saw them I knew I had to edit this documentary. I did.

You will see and hear from the victims of this bloody dictatorship, and what they had to say in anticipation of this past Sunday’s sham election.

“Burma: An Indictment” won Best Documentary at the Soho International Film Festival and a Silver Remi Award at the Houston International Film Festival earlier this year.

Working on a film like that makes you realize how lucky we are to be living in a country like this.

We need to acknowledge the dozens of anonymous photographers, videographers and ordinary Burmese citizens who risked imprisonment and torture to capture some of the images you have just seen.

What happens next in Burma is unclear. There’s little indication that things will get any better. Because foreign journalists are not allowed in Burma, much of this happens in a vacuum. Burma’s trading partners – china India and Thailand - are happy with the status quo – cheap labor – cheap resources. Burma is a rich country with children starving in the streets.

What you can do is to get more information on this unacceptable situation from this website freeburmaalliance.org. You will find more videos - individual stories of political prisoners and refugees - the latest news about Burma and what you can do to take action – what you need to tell your senator and the white house - because only international pressure can bring change.

Every political prisoner that I have met from Burma tells me that it was international pressure and awareness of their situation that got them released. Don’t let the people in Burma suffer in a vacuum.

Find out about this humanitarian crisis that has lasted decades. Speak out to your elected leaders about the need for change in Burma.

We should not tolerate slavery, torture and genocide. As civilized people in a privileged society it is only our duty to speak out.

once again, Boss Bloomberg is possibly, maybe vulnerable.
i'm not one for polls, but this one has some rare good news for Bill Thompson.

first of all, after spending tens of millions, the incumbent mayor barely breaks the halfway mark - the poll has him at only 51%. this percentage is consistent with other polls taken this month - not good for a two-term incumbent with a bottomless purse.

then there's a mere 8 points between them: Thompson gets 43%. Thompson numbers are strongest in the Bronx and Brooklyn, strongest with voters under 34, and of course with African-American voters.

so, is this the fire under Thompson's derrière that many of us have been waiting for? perhaps. Bloom and Thompson have a debate a week from tonight. neither of them are particularly good debaters, but expect Thompson to be on the attack. (he could use a big stick, a fire in his belly, a fire under his ass...)

a more ground-shifting debate would see a visibly pissed Bloomberg.
his arrogance is his greatest liability at this point.

meanwhile, back at the media mill, Thompson today released his latest ad, which targets the city's dwindling middle class. (you tell me if this is a ground-shifting statement.)

last show, a caller suggested that the only hope of defeating Boss Bloomberg would be intervention from Obama himself.

after all, she reasoned, Obama had made several campaign appearances for Jersey Gov. Corzine, so why not Bill Thompson?

well, not only does the White House want David Patterson out of the 2010 gubernatorial race, but the Prez may not lift a finger to help Thompson.

today's Daily News offers this bleak assessment for Thompson:

"I think [the President is] going to hedge," a Democrat close to Thompson glumly predicted.

"The first black President who tells the first black governor to get out, and he won't help the guy who wants to be the second black mayor? The irony is thick."

There's just five weeks until the mayoral election.

...Bloomberg is running on the GOP line, never made an endorsement in the 2008 presidential race and reportedly was on Sen. John McCain's vice presidential short list.

see, even the President of the United States doesn't want to risk bucking Bloomberg.

they are merely awaiting a born-again experience next month, as Entertainment Weekly launches the first-ever video-on-paper advertisement!

the creaky old “Tiffany” network, the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS, kids) will tout their honking new season with a tiny vid screen embedded into the pages of select (read: twelve or so) copies (distributed in NY and LA) of the September 18th paper edition of Entertainment Weekly Magazine!

it is even powered by a rechargeable battery - so you can watch previews of series years after CBS has canceled them!

in addition to alleviating that pesky reading problem (the ability to eyeball-scan and grok a printed page of characters inhibits heavy drinking and anti-depression med consumption, after all) this new innovation will no doubt spark the greatest revolution in print since that guy Gutenberg (if they could just bring the cost down).

there's no word on the cost of each unit, nor how much CBS is paying for the ad.
don't expect to see a video on the front page of Parade Magazine anytime soon, or even on the french Vogue.

it’s the 24th of january two-thousand-eight-candidates slinging mud- the economy is tanking – ths prez sez the check’s in the mail and our billionaire mayor tells everybody to tighten their belts. who sez there’s no good news?
first off, there’s Hillary and Obama getting down amd dirtier. ex-president Bill Clinton has had to be restrained by aides on more than one occasion because he did not like questions about his wife’s campaign posed by a reporter. Obama accuses Hillary of lying about his record, Edwards declares himself above the fray. i think theres something not kosher about this smackdown. seems to me that there’s some choreography, some collusion going on here – there’s some bigger purpose to all this noise- maybe to shed Obama’s nice guy image, maybe to emphasize Hillary’s testosterone . she was nearly in tears just a couple weeks ago.
a more immediate question looms over the united states and over the world tonight – more immedaite than who will be President next year, more immediate than -will this election be fixed like the last two, more immediate even than Amy Winehouse’s chemical dependency – the big question is - you got a job? you working? is it steady? does your paycheck cover your rent? because this is not the time you want to be looking for a job . the economy. the much-debated recession. since new years, Wall Street has been very shakey. last week, Citibank and others were forced to borrow forty-two billion dollars from the Arabs and from Asia. this past monday the markets in Hong Kong and london lost record amounts in a panic over our economy. then the feds in a rare emergency session, cut the intrest rate, not because of any specific set of circumstances – but because of panic and political pressure. too little, too late, and motivated by guilt. i’m no economic genius, i don’t understand deficits and prime rates, hell i couldn’t even give you money for a cup of coffee right now, but one thing i do know – i’m glad i’ve got a job. i’ve even been showing up early. i am very uneasy with what i’m seeing for the future. i’m not the only one listen to these voices raised in panic...
