the man who shot Rep. Giffords and 17 others today is identified as Jared Lee Laughner. this is his high school yearbook pic from 2006.
he had a MySpace page which has been taken down.
here is a video from his Youtube pageposted three weeks ago. can't make much sense of it - apparantly he was a student at Pima County Community College and had some dispute over tuition, which he characterized as 'unconstitutional', and he refers, in the abstract, to being removed from the campus by police because of 'speaking".
Laughner does not actually appear or speak on any of the five vids posted - only text and stock music. if you don't have any patience to actually watch, here's an excerpt:

on his home page, he lists some of his favorite books as "The Communist Manifesto", "Mein Kamph", "Fahrenheit 451" and "The Wizard of Oz".
someone who claimed to know Laughner in 2007 claims that Giffords actually met Laughner according to this post:

He was a political radical. He met Giffords once before in 2007. He asked her a question and he told me she was ‘stupid and unintelligent.

was he influenced by the "targeting" rhetoric? who knows.
i'm sure it didn't help.
